Yes, we provide trauma treatment so…
…let’s talk about trauma.
But before we do, remember that we don’t have to.
When it comes to talking about trauma we share an old school view.. Back in about 400 BC Hippocrates wisely said ‘first, do not harm’.
Its a phrase which is apt when it comes to the psychology of the mind (if you noticed what I did there you’ve likely read our first ever blog! If not…go and have a read of it here to learn about psychologists and the Kleenex concept )
First, do not harm.
It might sound simple but its a philosophy we believe in strongly.
I couldn’t tell you how many times we have had clients who have been pressured to seek therapy to “deal with trauma”. Quite often it’s a child of young person who has been referred by a well meaning support person.
Whilst the sentiment is good, the reality is that talk therapy, for talking sake is not always the answer. Not only that its not always healthy.
I’d love to say it is…talk therapy is what we are here to sell to you. But the reality is, it isnt always the right time to talk about trauma
We live in a society where there is pressure to understand, to diagnose, to talk, to process…
…and sometimes that pressure can quietly override what the person actually needs in that moment.
Because trauma work isn’t just about “talking it through”. It’s about timing, safety, capacity, and trust. Without those things in place, digging into painful experiences can actually leave someone feeling more overwhelmed, more dysregulated, and more disconnected from themselves — not less.
That doesn’t mean avoidance is the answer either. It just means there’s a difference between being ready to process and being pushed to process.
One is therapeutic.
The other can be harmful.
At GV Wellbeing, we often think about trauma work as something that is paced, layered, and grounded in safety first. Sometimes that means building skills before stories. Sometimes it means working with the nervous system before working with memory. Sometimes it means talking about everything else until your ready. And sometimes it simply means giving someone permission not to go there yet.
So when we say “first, do no harm”, we mean it in a very practical sense. Not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically too. Therapy should not be something that overwhelms the parts of you that are already trying to cope.
Healing isn’t always found in going deeper. Sometimes it’s found in stabilising, strengthening, and slowly widening the window of tolerance so that, one day, the deeper work feels possible — not forced.
And if that day isn’t today, that’s ok.
Good therapy doesn’t rush the story.
It respects the person telling it.
